Frequently Ask Questions

Solar panels absorb the sun's energy throughout the day and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. Most homes and businesses run on alternating current (AC) electricity, so the DC electricity is then passed through an inverter to convert it to usable AC electricity. At that point, you either use the electricity in your house or send it back to the electric grid.

Grid connect systems, which are the most common in built up areas, supply solar electricity through an inverter directly to the household and to the electricity grid if the system is providing more energy than the house needs. When power is supplied to the mains grid, the home owner usually receives a credit or a payment for that electricity. This is called a feed in tariff.

The amount of power your solar energy system can generate is dependent on sunlight. As a result, your solar panels will produce slightly less energy when the weather is cloudy, and no energy at night. However, because of high electricity costs and financial incentives, solar is a smart decision even if you live in a cloudy city.

If your solar panel system is connected to the grid, it will shut off in the event of a blackout. This is to prevent emergency responders and electricity utility repair-people from being injured by your panels sending power back to the grid. However, there are certain inverters you can buy that provide backup power in a blackout when paired with a battery.

Net metering is a billing mechanism whereby KE consumers are given credit for the electricity they add to the grid generated through Solar or Wind Power.

When Generation License is issued from NEPRA then tariff of Net Metering Consumers is converted to DG which differentiate them from the regular consumer. DG stands for Distributed Generation and refer to small scale generation. DG consumers are given credit for the electricity they add on KE Grid.

Only one net metering connection is allowed on one consumer number based on its sanctioned load. For separate meters, separate applications will be required.

It must also be ensured that the internal distribution system for each meter is separate.

  • The off-grid system also known as a standalone PV system proves to be a good alternative for remote places where access to the utility grid is a costly or impractical task. As this system is not connected to the grid, battery plays an important role in energy storage.
  • The solar panel, battery and inverter forms the basis of an off-grid solar system (In the previous article we have described the components necessary for an on and off-grid system)

Hybrid solar systems generate power in the same way as a common grid-tie solar system but use special hybrid inverters and batteries to store energy for later use. This ability to store energy enables most hybrid systems to also operate as a backup power supply during a blackout, similar to a UPS system.

Unless your solar energy system includes battery storage and you are fully off the grid, you will still receive a bill from your utility. However, you can dramatically reduce your bill, or even cut the amount you owe to 0 pkr, with a solar panel system that matches your energy use

If you own your solar energy system, your solar house will sell at a premium: studies have shown that solar increases property values.

Consumers generate electricity through solar/wind and generation from this system is more than what is required by the consumer. Without net metering, this excess generation goes to the grid unaccounted for and there is no benefit to the consumer. KE as the electric utility installs a bidirectional meter at the consumer’s premise which can record this excess generation and gives credit to the consumer on monthly bill.

The complete process takes around 90 days as defined in NEPRA regulations for Distributed Generation and Net Metering Regulations, 2015. However, processing time may increase in case prerequisites are not fulfilled by vendor/consumer

Common reasons for Delay:

  • Incomplete Documentation
  • Discrepancy in survey
  • In case 30% of transformer capacity exceeds and simulation study is required

While applying for net metering, both the applicant name in the forms and the name on the KE bill should be same. The consumer should initiate the Change of Name process at the concerned IBC and submit the net metering application at the facilitation center after the name on the bill is updated.
